A century ago, Poblenou's mills and factories earned it the nickname "the Manchester of Catalonia." Today those brick warehouses hold galleries, studios, and cafés, and the neighborhood's own Rambla runs all the way to the beach.

It's where Barcelona locals go to swim, skate, and picnic, with far fewer crowds than the Old City. Gaudí, the Gothic Quarter, and the rest of Barcelona are a short metro ride away whenever you want them.

Is Poblenou a safe, family-friendly area?

Yes. Poblenou is one of Barcelona's most residential, family-friendly neighborhoods, with a pedestrian Rambla, large parks, and a calm local beach. As in any big city, keep an eye on bags in busy tourist areas like the Old City and on the metro.

How close are we to the beach?

Bogatell Beach is at the bottom of the Rambla del Poblenou, a short walk from our Local Hosts' homes. Mar Bella and Nova Mar Bella beaches, plus the free Mar Bella Skatepark, are a little further along the promenade.

Do my kids need to speak Spanish or Catalan?

No. We'll confirm the language of instruction at the Education Centre and whether Spanish or Catalan lessons are included.

How do we get around without a car?

Easily. Metro Line 4 (yellow) stops at Poblenou and Llacuna, the T4 tram runs through the neighborhood, and several bus lines connect to the center. Most day-to-day life, from school to the beach, is walkable.

How long can we stay in Spain as U.S. citizens?

What's the weather like during the school year?

Mild and Mediterranean. Autumn and spring are warm and sunny, winters are cool but rarely cold, and summers are hot.
